Yoga is an ancient practice that unites the body and mind. Physical postures and breathing techniques help to bring balance to the body. The whole body is moved in every direction, this can help to increase flexibility and build strength in the body, we stay mobile and balanced
When we are stressed a chemical reaction takes place in the body setting off the fight or flight response which causes physical and emotional changes. Having a regular yoga practice gives us the opportunity to focus our awareness and find space, the reaction settles and the process of de-stressing and unwinding the body and mind can start.
Having a settled state of mind helps to keep our focus in the present moment and can help to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, we start to see things more clearly and make better, more conscious choices.
I teach a traditional Hatha Yoga class that is influenced by Scaravelli yoga, a practice based around functional body movement, working with gravity and unwinding tension. My teaching qualification is a British Wheel of Yoga teaching diploma, this two and half year course was taught by Wendy Teasdill whom I continue to work and study with alongside Bill Wood.
