If you experience irregular periods, painful periods, absence of periods, polycystic ovary syndrome or are looking for help with fertility, acupuncture may be helpful in treating all of these.
Stress and lifestyle factors can affect the menstrual cycle and female fertility, acupuncture can support the body by promoting a shift towards the para-sympathetic part of the nervous system which is the opposite of the fight or flight response and helps to keep the body in a calm state.

How does acupuncture help fertility?

The hypothalamic pituitary-ovarian axis (HPOA) is key to maintaining hormonal balance and fertility. it is affected by stress and lifestyle factors, by reducing these affects acupuncture can improve the function and regulate hormones.
(Ng 2008, Huang 2008, Lim 2010, Stener-Victorin 2010)
The drop in stress and hormone balancing effect can also increase blood flow within the pelvis including the uterus and to the ovaries, providing just the right environment for a thicker endometrium in which ovarian follicles develop, (Stener-Victorin 2006, Lim 2010).
When polycystic ovary syndrome is present acupuncture can help to soothe the nervous system, reduce ovarian cysts, regulate the menstrual cycle and stimulate ovulation. This increases the chances of blastocyst implantation. (Stener-Victorin 1996, Huang 2008)
